My kids brought home permission slips so they could watch President Obama's speech today. After I signed Boo's slip, I tried handing it back to her and told her to put it in her backpack.

"Oh, no thank you," she said, shaking her head at me.

"No," I told her, "it's your permission slip to watch the President's speech tomorrow."

"I know," she said. "I don't want it."

"What do you mean? You need to turn it into your teacher. Put it in your backpack."

"I don't want to watch it," she said. "It sounds boring." And then she rolled her eyes. She's six.

I stared at her for minute. "So what do I tell your teacher?" I asked.

"I don't know," she shrugged her shoulders. "Tell her I'm a republican."

And tell her that I'm a Republican, too.

But I have to ask (and maybe I'll be showing a colossal degree of stupidity here) why do kids need permission slips to watch a presidential speech? Is it somehow dangerous or potentially harmful? What horrible tragedy might befall them by observing? I'm confused.

Just like when I had to sign a permission form for the YMCA day camp counselors to assist Mr T in putting on sunscreen. WTF?!?! Ridiculous.

Please enlighten me, if you feel so inclined. I'm very curious.

Too funny my husband the total conservative would love that!

Boo is hilarious.

But WHAT? WHAT?! a permission slip to watch the PRESIDENT'S speech?! Shouldn't familiarizing kids with our government system be part of education? I don't....wow. I guess I am really glad I never became a teacher. I remember my English teacher in Hike Skool letting us go to the library to watch the verdict in the OJ Simpson trial, and there were no permission slips involved!

I am completely clueless as to why a permission slip is needed to watch THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES speak. RIDICULOUS!! Yet, as my good friend Brooke pointed out to me via email because she is too lazy to sign up to post a comment (love you Brookie!), our kids watched a VIDEO about September 11th, which discussed death and terrorism, and no permission slip went home about that. I hate to sound like I'm 80 years old but OH MY GOD what is this world coming to? So dumb.

Hilarious. She sounds like a great kid, and a handful. I love it.

Oh my GOLLY, she is funny. And smart. You're gonna be so screwed when she's a teenager -- you have NO idea! I suggest you start drinking now....and none of that beer business that Ubes is so fond of. I'm talking hard liquor, and lots of it.

Great response.

The permission slip is required because last year extrme Right wingers got all up in arms over part of Obama's back to school speech. Claiming that "His speech was trying to indoctrinate kids to a liberal way of life.." blah blah blah.

Schools decided to avoid any local political backlash they would send home permission slips.

There was sneakiness on the Democrat side going into the whole speech last year that did raise some red flags.
